Open Tournaments
We will post some recommended tournaments after the Keystone Tournament
Entry Forms can be printed from the Pennsylvania Youth Wrestling Link
Throughout the season there are open tournaments in the area. These tournaments are not a part of our regular wrestling program. This is something that you do on your own time. If you wish to
take your son to a tournament, but do not expect that a PT coach will be in attendance. You will find that at an Open Tournament, that most parents coach their child. If there happens to be a PT coach is in attendance with one of their own children
it is ok to ask him to coach your child. Our program recommends that if you choose to have your child do open tournaments, that you wait until after the regular Keystone Season is over as not to interfere with the Keystone season. It is also
advised that your child only wrestles one day out of any given weekend. This season we will NOT be posting results from Open Tournaments on this site.
What to Expect at an Open Tournament
· Typically, an adult admission fee of $1.00-$5.00 is charged, wrestlers are free, and other children are free or at a lesser rate. All wrestlers will also pay a $10 - $20 registration fee in advance in order to participate.
· Upon arriving at the school, check in at the registration table and complete the necessary paperwork if you have not pre-registered.(Sometimes Walk-In's are allowed.)
· Next, report to the weigh in area. The wrestler must weigh exactly or under the pre-registered weight he selected on the registration form. Sometimes a tournament will "give a pound", meaning that you can be over by 1 pound. Your child's nails will be checked and he will also be checked for ring worm or other skin diseases. If a skin disease is found, your child
will not be permitted to compete. If your child has been treated by a doctor for a skin disease and is no longer contagious, you must provide the referee with a Skin Disease Form that has been signed by your doctor. (This form can be found & printed from the Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling Link)
· Your wrestler will have a minimum of 2 matches in a double elimination tournament. He will be paired with someone of equal weight and age range each match. He will continue to wrestle and move up in the bracket with each win. Sometimes a wrestler will have 5-6 matches depending on the number of wrestlers in their bracket.
· Wrestlers can warm up while the school representatives conduct weigh-ins and finalize the weight brackets.
· There are usually 4-6 matches going on at a time. Please listen for your child's name and or weight/age to and send him to the staging area. Instead of listening for names, you may have to watch for match numbers to be posted.(The staging area is a pre-defined area of the gym where the wrestlers report and are paired up with another wrestler to wait their turn to wrestle on the assigned mat.)
· Always be sure your wrestler has a Penn Trafford coach at his mat before he begins the match. (Most times if a coach is not present, the announcer will ask for a coach to come to that particular mat, however, please don't start without him). Please note that if you take your wrestler to an open tournament, sometimes there will not be any PT Coaches present, if this occurs, a parent can coach.
· Parents and siblings can go down to the mat where their child is wrestling but they cannot be on the wrestling area of the mat or interfere with the coaching or refereeing. Video taping & Photography is allowed.
· Wins and loses are recorded and awards are given, usually to the 1st-4th place winners. Sometimes team awards will be given as well.
· The hosting school usually sells concessions, consisting of breakfast and lunch items. A 50/50 drawing is usually held as well as a raffle or two. At times, wrestling gear vendors set up tables at these matches and items are sold during the day.
· An Open Tournament can start around 8:00 AM, and last until 5:00 PM or later, depending on the number of wrestlers registered.
· Throughout the season we will post Open Tournaments on our website where there will often be a group of wrestlers from PT attending. Please understand that Open Tournaments are strictly optional and are not required as a part of our program.
